The U.S. art fair calendar has consolidated around a small number of anchor events, with each fair serving a distinct role in a collector's annual planning.

2

Frieze Los Angeles, Art Basel Miami Beach and The Armory Show are the three anchor fairs; the spring gallery walks and the satellite fairs supplement the calendar.

3

A well-planned fair season is built around the collector's strategy, not around the collector's calendar, and the advisor's role is to keep the two aligned.

4

The most common mistake first-time fair-goers make is buying in the moment; the second is treating the fair as the only way to discover new work.

The shape of the U.S. fair calendar

The U.S. art fair calendar has consolidated around a small number of anchor events, with each fair serving a distinct role in a collector's annual planning. Frieze Los Angeles in February, The Armory Show in New York in September, and Art Basel Miami Beach in December are the three anchor fairs. EXPO Chicago, Felix in Los Angeles, and a series of smaller satellite fairs supplement the calendar.

The 2026 Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report observes that the U.S. fair calendar has stabilised after a decade of expansion, with collectors and advisors treating the major fairs as planning anchors rather than discovery events. A well-planned fair season is built around the collector's strategy, not around the collector's calendar, and the advisor's role is to keep the two aligned.

Frieze Los Angeles

Frieze Los Angeles is held in February at the Hollywood Park development in Inglewood, a mixed-use development that includes the SoFi Stadium, a retail district, and a residential component. The fair moved to the new venue in 2023 and has grown steadily since. Frieze Los Angeles focuses on contemporary and modern work, with a strong showing from Los Angeles-based galleries and a growing international contingent.

For a Los Angeles-based collector, Frieze LA is the anchor of the spring collecting season. For an out-of-town collector, Frieze LA is an opportunity to see the LA market concentrated in a single venue, with the gallery districts available for follow-up visits during the same trip. The advisor's role at Frieze LA is to navigate the fair with the collector, to set a budget, and to identify the works that fit the collector's strategy.

The Armory Show

The Armory Show is held in September at the Javits Center in New York. The fair focuses on modern and contemporary work, with a strong showing from New York-based galleries and a significant international contingent. The Armory Show has been a fixture of the U.S. fair calendar since 1994, and is widely considered the most important contemporary fair in the United States.

For a New York-based collector, the Armory Show is the anchor of the fall collecting season. For an out-of-town collector, the Armory Show is an opportunity to see the New York market concentrated in a single venue, with the gallery districts available for follow-up visits. The advisor's role at the Armory Show is similar to the role at Frieze LA: navigate with the collector, set a budget, identify the works that fit the strategy.

Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach is held in early December at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The fair focuses on modern and contemporary work, with a strong showing from international galleries and a meaningful Latin American contingent. Art Basel Miami Beach has been a fixture of the U.S. fair calendar since 2002, and is widely considered the most important contemporary fair in the Americas.

For a Miami-based collector, Art Basel Miami Beach is the anchor of the winter collecting season. For an out-of-town collector, the fair is an opportunity to see the international market concentrated in a single venue, with the satellite fairs (Untitled Art Fair Miami Beach, Design Miami, and a series of smaller events) available for follow-up visits. The advisor's role at Art Basel Miami Beach is the most complex of the three anchor fairs: the volume of work is large, the competition is high, and the discipline of the collector's strategy is the most important factor in a successful week.

EXPO Chicago and Felix

EXPO Chicago is held in October at Navy Pier, and focuses on modern and contemporary work with a strong showing from Chicago-based and Midwestern galleries. EXPO Chicago has been a fixture of the U.S. fair calendar since 2012, and is widely considered the most important contemporary fair in the U.S. Midwest. Felix, held in July at the Hollywood Park development in Los Angeles, is a smaller fair that focuses on mid-career and emerging programmes.

For collectors with regional interests, EXPO Chicago and Felix are anchor events in their own right. For collectors without regional interests, these fairs are opportunities to see work that does not travel to the three anchor fairs, and to support regional gallery communities.

The satellite fairs

A series of satellite fairs orbit the three anchor fairs. Independent, Spring/Break, and a number of smaller events run alongside The Armory Show. Untitled Art Fair Miami Beach, Design Miami, and a series of smaller events run alongside Art Basel Miami Beach. Felix, the spring gallery walks, and a series of smaller events supplement the Los Angeles calendar.

The satellite fairs are valuable for collectors who want to see emerging work, to support smaller galleries, or to discover programmes that are not yet in the anchor fair rotation. The satellite fairs are also valuable for the social programme: the satellite fairs are where collectors, advisors and gallery owners meet informally, and the social programme is part of the work.

Planning a fair season

A well-planned fair season begins with the collector's strategy. The collector reviews the collection's current state, the collector's budget for the year, the collector's areas of focus, and the collector's criteria for new acquisitions. The collector then identifies the fairs that fit the strategy, and the collector's advisor supports the planning by tracking the gallery lists, the catalogue releases, and the previews.

The advisor's role in the planning is to keep the collector's strategy aligned with the fair calendar. The advisor is also the collector's representative at the fair, and the advisor's presence at the fair is the collector's presence at the fair. A collector who attends the fair without the advisor is a collector who is operating alone in the most operationally intense part of the market.
