Miami has become a year-round collecting market, anchored by Art Basel Miami Beach and a growing calendar of satellite fairs and design weeks.

2

The gallery community is concentrated in Wynwood, the Design District and a smaller set of neighbourhoods across Miami Beach and Coral Gables.

3

The collector base is unusually international for a U.S. secondary market, with strong representation from Latin America, Europe and the East Coast.

4

Miami's advisor base has grown alongside the market, with established independent practices, gallery-affiliated advisors, and a number of newer entrants focused on Latin American collecting and luxury development.

The shape of the market

Miami is the third-largest contemporary art market in the United States by transaction value, after New York and Los Angeles. The 2026 Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report places Miami alongside Los Angeles as a co-equal secondary centre for U.S. contemporary collecting, with a market structure that has matured over the last decade.

Unlike Los Angeles, the Miami market is anchored by a small number of major fairs rather than a dispersed gallery network. The fair calendar drives most of the year's transaction activity, and the city's gallery community operates in close alignment with the fairs. The market is also unusually international for a U.S. secondary centre, with strong representation from Latin America, Europe and the East Coast.

Fairs and the calendar

Art Basel Miami Beach, held in early December at the Miami Beach Convention Center, is the city's anchor fair and one of the most important contemporary fairs in the world. The fair was founded in 2002 and has grown steadily since. Untitled Art Fair Miami Beach, held in the same week, focuses on mid-career and emerging programmes. Design Miami, also held in early December, runs alongside the art fairs and brings the design and decorative arts world into the same week.

Beyond the December concentration, the city has built a year-round programme. Art Week Miami has expanded from a December event to a series of fairs and openings across the calendar, including the satellite fairs that orbit Art Basel Miami Beach, the spring gallery walks, and a series of design weeks and art programmes that activate neighbourhoods across the year. The 2026 Art Basel and UBS report observes that Miami has moved from a single-week market to a near-year-round collecting market.

Gallery districts

The primary gallery districts in Miami are concentrated in a few areas. Wynwood, the city's arts neighbourhood, hosts the largest concentration of contemporary galleries, with a mix of primary-market programmes, project spaces and a growing number of established galleries that have relocated from other cities. The Design District hosts a smaller set of high-end programmes, anchored by the Design Miami fair and the neighbourhood's commercial design galleries. Miami Beach, particularly the area around Lincoln Road and the surrounding blocks, hosts a mix of contemporary and modern programmes.

Secondary clusters exist in Coral Gables, where a long-standing gallery community operates alongside the city's commercial art district, and in Little Haiti and the Upper Eastside, where newer programmes have opened. The dispersion is less pronounced than in Los Angeles, which means an advisor in Miami typically operates across a smaller geographic footprint but covers a wider range of programmes.

The collector base

The Miami collector base is unusually international for a U.S. secondary market. The base includes long-standing local collectors in Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Pinecrest; a strong representation of Latin American collectors, particularly from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico; a meaningful share of European collectors, particularly from France, Italy and Spain; and a significant number of East Coast collectors who maintain a Miami presence for part of the year.

The collector base also includes a growing community of collectors who have relocated to Miami from New York, the Bay Area and other U.S. cities, drawn by tax considerations, lifestyle and the city's growing cultural infrastructure. The advisor's role for these collectors is often to bridge their existing collecting interests with the Miami market and to coordinate with their home-base advisors.

The advisor layer

Miami's advisor base has grown alongside the market, with established independent practices, gallery-affiliated advisors, and a number of newer entrants focused on Latin American collecting, luxury real-estate development, and the cross-border collector. The advisor base is broader than it was a decade ago, and the work the advisors do is more institutional than it was a decade ago.

Notable practices include established Miami-based advisors with long-standing local and international collector relationships, and a number of newer entrants focused on contemporary collecting, family-office engagement and luxury development. The 2026 Art Basel and UBS report notes that Miami's advisor market has the highest share of cross-border engagement of any U.S. secondary market, which is reflected in the structure of the city's advisor base.

Working with a Miami advisor

A Miami-based advisor is typically engaged for one of three reasons. The first is local presence: a collector with a Miami residence needs a local advisor for acquisitions during the fair season and throughout the year. The second is cross-border reach: a collector who lives outside the region, or who collects Latin American or Latinx work, needs an advisor who knows the Miami market and the cross-border logistics. The third is a defined project: a collector who is building a focused collection, formalising a family-office programme, or coordinating with a luxury development may engage a Miami-based advisor for a defined engagement.

The right advisor for a given engagement is the one whose practice, fee structure and engagement model fit the engagement. The Miami advisor base is broad enough to support most engagement types, and a credible advisor will be transparent about the work they do and the work they refer out.
